In fierce competition with a host of nominated companies and two other finalists, Solvatten AB was awarded the $25,000 prize for its groundbreaking work in the field of water purification technology, specifically the development of the Solvatten water treatment unit.
Clean water is essential for life, but one in eight of the world’s population does not have access to it. Solvatten is a specially designed container that uses heat, UV and a built-in filter to clean contaminated water. It is common knowledge that boiling can make water safe to drink. But it is not as widely known that UV light also kills micro-organisms. The patented Swedish invention Solvatten inactivates micro-organisms that cause diarrhea and disease, producing water which meets the WHO’s Guidelines for Safe Water (<1 E-coli/100ml water).
Following ten years of research and testing, Solvatten AB is now being used in controlled studies in Nepal and Kenya, with impressive results. The combined water container, purifier and heater is targeted at the world’s most disadvantaged people – people without access to such basics as electricity and safe drinking water.
Petra Wadström, CEO & Founder of Solvatten: ”When I was notified of winning the Green Award, I was overwhelmed. This means so much for our small company and for all the people in the world who need clean water. Your prize solidifies my passion!”
Peter Gustafsson, Deloitte: ”Unlimited resources are a thing of the past. With energy costs and water scarcity on the rise, sustainability has become a strategic imperative. At Deloitte, we know and have seen that when you understand and act on sustainability, you are set to accelerate. That is why we are proud sponsors of the New York Green Award.”
The event featured prominent executives, politicians and scholars from both Sweden and the United States. The guest list comprised a.o.
