SACC New York Deloitte Green Award

EkoBalans Wins 2014 SACC New York-Deloitte Green Award

In recognition of the company's groundbreaking work in the field of nutrient recycling, specifically the development of their from-waste-to-solid-fertilizer technology

Ekobalans has won the 2014 SACC New York-Deloitte Green Award in recognition of the company’s groundbreaking work in the field of extraction of nutrients from agricultural waste.

Swedish company Ekobalans has won the 2014 SACC New York-Deloitte Green Award, which was presented to the company at a Gala Award Dinner in New York. The Gala – and the award presentation – was organized by The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce (SACC) in New York and took place on November 4, 2014 at the Central Park Boathouse in New York City.

The Gala Award Dinner preceded the New York Green Summit, titled From Farm to Fork. This 7th Annual Green Summit focused on sustainability with the theme ”The Urbanization Challenge”. It brought together notable authorities from within business, politics, media, and culture, including such personalities as Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation; Joshua David, Co-Founder and CEO of Friends of the High Line; Elizabeth Heider, Chief Sustainability Officer at Skanska USA; Doug Rauch, Founder of Daily Table and former President of Trader Joe’s; Steve Hindy, President & CEO of Brooklyn Brewery; Kara Rubin from Whole Foods Market and Chef Marcus Samuelsson.

Based on solid knowledge in chemical engineering and plant ecology, EkoBalans’ business idea is to develop complete systems for the sustainable handling of nutrient rich residues such as sludge, digestate or manure, and then offer those systems to sewage treatment plants, biogas plants, and farms. The company’s primary goal is to return the nutrients from the EkoBalans' process to the production of food, because of very low levels of metals, such as cadmium. EkoBalans vision is to complete the nutrient cycles by closing the loops for nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen.

The SACC New York-Deloitte Green Award is given to a company that demonstrates:

  • A breakthrough “green” invention or technology,
  • A proven technology or product ready to sell and ship, and,
  • A need for the help and support in entering the U.S. market that the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York can offer.

The winner was selected by the SACC New York-Deloitte Green Award jury, which in 2014 included: Mr. Steve Trygg, Jury Chairman and Chairman of SACC New York; Mr. Andreas Marcetic, Partner, Deloitte Sweden.
