Lucia Trade Award
The Lucia Trade Award was instituted in 1988, the year commemorating the 350th anniversary of the landing of the first Swedish immigrants in the United States. The year was declared one of friendship between the U.S. and Sweden. Deep symbolism can be found in the award itself. Free trade means enlightenment and
St. Lucia, symbolizes light, hope and peace for humanity.
Each year, the award is given to a person who has significantly contributed to fostering free trade between the two countries. It affirms the philosophy of peace through trade and acknowledges the belief that interdependence, cooperation and communication enhance mutual understanding, and therefore peace.
