Thomas Nilsson, from Linköping in Sweden, is the recipient of the 2007 Bertil Edlund scholarship and will work at the Business Services practice at the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce Inc., New York during 2007. Bertil Edlund handed over the scholarship himself at the 19th Lucia Trade Award Dinner at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York.

Thomas Nilsson is a top student from Linköping University and holds a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management. Thomas has spent one year in Singapore where he studied at the National University for Singapore. He has a strong interest in international business and trade and has an ambition to expand his knowledge in these areas by assisting Swedish companies to explore the U.S. market and establish their operations there and vice versa.

“It is a tremendous opportunity to get to New York and work at the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce, and it provides experiences that are impossible to get in other ways. The position includes contact with and exposure to a wide array of businesses and companies and provides an unbeatable opportunity to earn the business experience to further an international career”, says Thomas Nilsson

Bertil Edlund expressed his gratitude towards the Chambers Initiative, and towards the fact that so many highly qualified students, from universities all over Sweden, applied for this scholarship. He stressed the urgency of students getting the necessary support to enable them to bridge the challenge of going from life as a student to the world of business.

“The older generation must contribute to giving interested students experience from different countries, cultures and business practices as well as to help in building bridges between academia and the practical realities of business. The industry leaders will face even higher demands from a global economy, this also goes for smaller businesses and entrepreneurs”, says Bertil Edlund.

The Bertil Edlund Foundation, which hands out the scholarship, was created on the initiative of Öhrlings PricewaterhouseCoopers after Bertil Edlund ended his 20 years as chairman and partner of Öhrlings PricewaterhouseCoopers. Bertil Edlund has also participated in the development of the accounting industry through different chairing positions. In addition Bertil Edlund has had leading roles internationally within PricewaterhouseCoopers and has been the world president of The International Federation of Accountants.
