Last updated: 2018-10-10 13:30 Press release

Today, there are three Cleantech hubs, in San Francisco, London, and Shanghai. Now another hub is being launched in New York, in collaboration with the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York. The new hub will be a part of Gateway – an innovation platform and physical meeting place in New York for Swedish and American growth companies and international corporations.

The purpose of the Swedish Energy Agency’s Cleantech hubs is to support Swedish companies and their energy innovations to establish themselves on international markets. The Cleantech hub in New York is part of a long-term collaboration with the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York and Epicenter, Stockholm’s first digital innovation house.

-With the launch of Gateway, a joint venture with Epicenter and other partners, we look forward to this joint venture together with the Swedish Energy Agency, says Anna Throne-Holst, President of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York.

Gateway is located on the 29th floor of a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, which is where the Cleantech Hub will have its physical presence. The companies will have access to Gateway programming and services including innovation labs, business matchmaking, acceleration programs, skill development, and flexible office space.

-By helping the Swedish Energy Agency’s companies expand their networks, meet investors and industry leaders in New York, we provide these companies with a unique springboard into the U.S. market. We see that the opportunities to promote Swedish innovation and transformative solutions in the energy sector are endless in New York, which is one of the world’s largest markets in cleantech, says Anna Throne-Holst.

Swedish energy innovations contribute to global climate benefits
For the past several years the Swedish Energy Agency has focused on getting scalable and transformative solutions, that significantly contribute to the transition to a sustainable energy system, to the international market.

The Swedish Energy Agency is constantly looking for Swedish innovations that can contribute to the transition and three key criteria are:

  • The effect the innovation has on the transition to a sustainable energy system
  • Scalability and growth potential
  • Export potential
  • The hub is part of our strategy to deliver sharp and smart solutions, with high scalability and high potential, to contribute to the transition to a sustainable energy system.

We see that the majority of our solutions have an international market and at the moment there is a strong momentum from business, politics and the public sector for this type of innovations – therefore, this initiative is very important for our Swedish companies and Sweden Ltd, says Andreas Stubelius, portfolio manager at the Swedish Energy Agency.
